1
What is the Nutrition
Care Process?
3
A standardized model, a
systematic problem-solving
method that uses critical
thinking to make decisions
about nutrition problems and
provide safe and effective
high quality nutrition care.
12/ 4/ 1436‫هـ‬
Why use Nutrition Care
Process?
4
 ADA Quality Management
Committee appointed the
Nutrition Care Model workgroup in 2002
Promote demand for RD services
Help RD become more competitive
 Developed the Nutrition Care Process and Model
Improve consistency and quality of care provided
Enhance predictability of outcomes
 The NCP provides a framework and consistent
structure regardless of the care setting or client/patient

2
What is the Medical
Nutrition Therapy (MNT)?
5
MNT is a specific application of the
NCP in clinical settings
that is focused on the management of
diseases. MNT involves in-depth
individualized nutrition assessment at a
duration and frequency of care using the
Nutrition Care Process to manage disease.

Medical Nutrition Therapy
(MNT)
6
Medical Nutrition Therapy includes:
1.
performing a comprehensive nutrition assessment
determining the nutrition diagnosis
2.
planning and implementing a nutrition intervention
using evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines
3.
monitoring and evaluating an individual’s progress
over subsequent visits with the RD.

NCP
is the process whereby MNT is
provided
NCP
outlines the steps in providing
MNT
NCP
is the framework and MNT is the
nuts and bolts

What is Critical Thinking?
12
 “A complex
set of cognitive skills employed in
problem-solving”
 Ability to analyze a problem and develop
potential solutions
 Determining appropriate data to collect
 Distinguishing relevant from irrelevant data
 Validating data
 Organizing data to relate to nutrition problems
 Provide Potential solutions

there a nutrition problem?
Is
more information needed?
What
is the probability of finding the
problem with more information?

Without more information?
