YWLA Alumnae Spotlight-Her Words
Marina B (Class of 2014) spent her winter br eak in Chile!
In my first year entering Agnes Scott College, I was a bit skeptical
as to the level of education I would be obtaining, being that I had
never heard of this college nor the programs they had to offer.
However, I quickly learned that the decision I made was the correct
one. Not only was I awarded the Perry Presidential Scholarship, but
I was also given the opportunity to have a short study abroad in
Chile where I studied the culture of the country. I partook in
astronomical observations. In Chile, my class and I visited five
major cities: Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Santiago, Antofagasta, and
San Pedro de Atacama. In the first three cities, we studied the culture of the country and lived lives as Chileans would. I, along with my roommate, stayed with
a host family in Viña del Mar where we lived and experienced the culture. After which, my
class and I traveled up north to the Atacama Desert where we studied astronomy and visited
the ALMA telescope and the Paranal Observatory. It was an experience I will never forget,
and one that I would recommend every student try to experience. WE’RE PROUD OF YOU,
MARINA!

Shout out to all of the amazing Seniors & their parents for completing the FAFSA! Please r emember to complete the IRS tax transfer
if you have not already done so. Parents please help me remind your daughter to check all of her prospective campus accounts. These
accounts are the main way that the campus will communicate with your student.
Top Honors: Our students hard work and the preparation that they have received during their time here is seeing a return on investment.
We are proud to recognize the following student(s):
 Congratulations to senior Ilanna V who has been named one of 11 Coca-Cola Scholars in Texas. She is one of only three in San Antonio.
Ilanna has completed over 200 hours in community service and is a member of the YWLA Cardinal Senate as well as the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board. She will join 149 other Coca-Cola Scholars in April for scholars weekend in Atlanta, where they meet
their peers for a time of inspiration, fun, and camaraderie. Coca-Cola Scholars will all be awarded $20,000 in scholarship funds. The Coca-Cola Scholars Weekend marks the beginning of a lifelong connection among new scholarship recipients and the
extended family
of thousands of Coca-Cola Scholars.
Senior Parent Reminder:

Please set up your daughter’s visit to her doctor for her necessary immunizations for college. The Meningococcal Vaccine is required
and she will not be allowed to register for classes without proof of this vaccination.

Don’t forget to bring in your acceptance letters as well as your financial aid packages! Check your email and mailbox regularly! It is
important that you do not miss any deadlines.
Junior & Senior Parents:
Please be patient with our new Cap/Gown/Ring vendor Jostens. They are still working on the ring mold with their manufacturer. The orders
will be filled in time for the ceremony and while you will not be able to order online you are able to place orders over the phone or in person.
College Connections- Missouri University of Science & Technology - If your daughter is considering an engineering career pathway
this campus is for her! S&T does a wonderful job supporting each student through their time on campus and is genuinely focused on the areas
of science and technology. They are nationally ranked above MIT for best engineering program, and have programs for various engineering
fields as well as computer science, chemistry, biology as well as social sciences. Their small class sizes as well as student to teacher ratio
offer plenty of opportunities for research and are taught by world renowned professors. Rolla, Missouri where this campus is located, is only
an 8 hour drive from Dallas & Southwest has great deals into the St. Louis airport.

The UTSA PREP program is in the final stages of reviewing applications for their summer programs. As you consider your daughter’s
summer options, we want to ensure that you are aware of how the PREP program impacts summer homework expectations for middle school
students. If a middle school student completes the PREP program, they are not required to complete the YWLA summer homework.
However, they will still need to read any of the assigned summer novels and complete the associated novel projects. If a student participates
in only a portion of PREP and fails to complete the program, they will still be required to complete summer homework. All high school
students are required to complete summer homework regardless of their PREP participation.
Transferring PREP Credits onto High School Transcripts
If your daughter does well in the PREP program, she is eligible to have the course grade placed on her high school transcript as a state credit.
This means that it would count as an elective credit and the grade would be factored into her GPA calculation. If your child has participated
in the PREP program in previous years (even if it was in middle school) and you would like to have the PREP grade and credit added to her
transcript, you will need to contact the UTSA PREP program in order to initiate the credit transfer process. The link below will take you to
the form UTSA will require you to complete before they will release the grade to YWLA:

Kindness
As parents, we spend a considerable amount of time helping our children find their voice by coaching them on how to speak up when they’ve
been wronged or when something they believe in is being questioned. However, it is just as important that we
spend time coaching them on how to use their voice and their actions to impart good and kindness in the world
around them as well. In our announcements each day, we ask our girls to find opportunities to do random acts of
kindness for those around them. Being able to identify needs in the community around you is an important skill for
any leader, but beyond that, it is important in our efforts to build the YWLA sisterhood. I encourage you to have a
conversation with your daughter about what this means and what a small act of kindness can do for a friend (or a
“frenemy”). Give examples of things you have done for others before, or describe an act of kindness that someone
has done for you and how it impacted you. Make kindness and compassion a focus for your discussions with your
daughter.

National Women’s History Month
March is celebrated across the United States as National Women’s History Month. This month is the celebration of some of
the greatest women who brought about the suffragette movement and the liberation of Women in the United States. March 8 th
is International Women’s History Day. On this day, we remember and appreciate the work and sacrifices of women involved
in the feminist movement, like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, who worked specifically to secure the right for
Women to vote. The National Women’s History Project, an annual historical celebration of women, gives a topic each year to
highlight certain areas of the movement. This year’s (2015) topic is W eaving the Stories of W omen’s Lives.
