LEADERSHIP MATTERS from Dr. Roger Yancey, Director of Missions The search for the new ministry leader of the Sam Houston State University of Huntsville has culminated in the recommendation of the Administrative Team of David Griffin to the Executive Board on April 19th. David has a strong background in the ministry of the BSM both as a student and leader in the campus ministry. He and Catharine recently welcomed their first son James to their family this past January. David’s resume has been mailed to all of our member churches and we will be presenting him for a vote of affirmation by the Executive Board on April 19th during a special called Executive Board meeting for that purpose. You are also invited to view David’s full resume online at the following: http://k.b5z.net/i/u/2177935/f/David_Griffin_BSM_Resume.pdf. Abridged Resume of David I. Griffin Ministry Perspective Scripture has convinced me that the first job of any minister is to make disciples. In a BSM, I feel that this typically takes place through the initiation of worship, the teaching of Scripture, the establishment of Christian fellowship, the support of the local church, and the work of missions at home and abroad. Furthermore, discipleship building also must include the cultivating and development of close purposeful relationships between the minister and each student. BSM Passion My passion to work in BSM stems from the fact that it just feels like such a good fit for me and Catharine. Both of us love working with college students, investing in their lives, and watching them grow. But not only this, my distinct Spiritual gift set seem to also match what I believe it takes to minister to college students. APRIL Ministry Passion My passion in ministry stems from the joy I have in my relationship with Jesus Christ. Knowing that God created me, loves me, redeemed me, and has a purpose for me has compelled me to serve him with my whole heart and life. Romans 12:1-2 reveals that there is a “right response” to God’s salvation, and for all of us that includes a moral and Spirit-led way of living. For me, this verse is a life mission verse; as I lay down my life as a living sacrifice, I feel I should live it out as minister of the gospel. Personal Background I was born in Houston, Texas in the summer of 1983 to two wonderful and godly parents who raised my brother and me within the local church. My parents have always served within our church; my father as deacon and my mother as the church pianist. As a very young boy, at the age of five, I made the decision to follow Jesus. Later on, after much doubt about my salvation experience and after coming to a point in my life where I wanted to be serious about my walk with the Lord, I rededicated my life to God in the early days of college (August 2002). After a year of college and growing in the Lord within the fellowship of a great Christian community, I began to have a deep burden in my heart to surrender to God’s calling to full-time ministry. At that time I made a commitment to follow God wherever He would lead me. On the very first day at Dallas Theological Seminary I met the one who would later become my bride. In the coming months we began a dating relationship that culminated in our marriage a year and a half later. Thousands of college students were fed pancakes, given free rides, handed sunscreen, and engaged with the Gospel of Christ. Instead of Beach Reach 2011, it was occasionally referred to as “Sleep Deprivation 2011” as we worked shifts between 9pm and 4am to return the next morning to serve pancakes to a hungry community. The best part is: all 17 of us would do it again in a second. College students from all over the United States (also Spain, India, and Mexico) piled in our vans during the hours of 9pm and 4am. One particular night, we opened our van door to Nick, Ryan, Derek, and Garrett. On our way to Louie’s (a popular bar), all of us in the van began to get to know Derek, who had recently been in a serious accident. “The EMT told me I wasn’t going to make it. I’ve had over $900,000 worth of surgery. Two months after my accident, my brother died.” Our hearts dropped as Derek shared with us about his outlook on life and tragedies he has been a part of. “I’m in pain every day of my life. My leg constantly hurts.” One of our team members felt prompted to ask, “Derek, has anyone ever prayed over you before?” Our van was almost at its destination and as we pulled over Derek replied, “No. No one ever has.” All of a sudden Ryan, Derek’s friend, interrupted. “Well, if we are going to pray then I need to be forgiven. I need forgiveness.” All of us were ecstatic to pray with these 4 guys. “Derek, this might be kind of weird, but do you mind if we put our hands on your knee?” Derek stretched his leg out, inviting us to pray for him. We placed on our hands on Derek and the 4 guys held hands and bowed their heads. “Before we pray, we just want you guys to know that we are going to pray in the name of Jesus. He is the healer.” Everyone nodded, and we prayed. Our team was able to sow on college campus that we will never physically step foot on. Our hope for the students we met is that the conversations we had over pancakes, on the beach, and during van rides will continue as the thousands we met return to their campuses all across the country. The hope we have for our BSM is that living missionally will become the DNA of who we are, and our prayer is that Beach Reach is used to propel us into the daily Great Commission. Thank you for your support of the BSM and its service. Picture 1~~~Some of our team after spending time in the Scriptures at Sunrise. Picture 2~~Everyday there was a different sand sculptor built on the most popular beach spot (Coca-Cola Beach). This was used to dialogue about the Gospel. One of our students led someone to a relationship with Christ during her shift at the sculptor and countless people asked for prayer! Picture 3~~Over 70 people were baptized during our time in South Padre. Baptist Student Ministry P. O. Box 5065, Huntsville, TX 77342-5065 936-295-2962 www.sambsm.org
