Therefore, Passover not only celebrates the historical Exodus of the Jewish people from Egypt, it is the night of redemption for all of Jewish history, past, present and future. The Exodus from Egypt set the stage for all future redemptions, and so Passover has a particular relevance and inspirational meaning in our own generation – perhaps more so than ever before. Throughout our history, Jews have conducted Passover Seders under the threat of blood libels and pogroms; in ghettos, prisons and even concentration camps, always praying for "Next Year in Jerusalem." Why can’t each person simply celebrate our night of liberation as he or she sees fit? To demonstrate the important lesson that true freedom is not achieved by everyone doing whatever he wants, but following the word of God. Despite the seemingly rigid parameters, go visit any two Jewish homes and you will not find two identical Seders. Each family adds their own customs and personality so that, in the end, the Seder is a charming balance between structure and spontaneity. Take the middle Matzah and break it in two. The larger piece is set aside for the Afikoman. Fill the second cup of wine. The youngest present then asks: This Year in Jerusalem Haggadah 2012 © www.israel365.co.il 10 Magid - מגיד Uncover the Matzah and say: Magid The central focus of the Seder is the section of Magid. Magid ( )מגידmeans ‘to tell’ and shares the same root as in Haggadah ( )הגדהbased on Exodus (13:8): והגדת לבנך- vehigad'ta l'bincha: "And you shall tell your children, on that day, saying: that on account of this the Lord took me out of Egypt." However, the same Hebrew root ד-ג- נhas another meaning as well and that is to bind, join and connect. What is the connection between telling a story and joining together? By recounting the story of the Exodus, we are doing more than recalling events that occurred long ago. Telling our story connects one generation to the next, joining us to our grandparents and our grandchildren. We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord, our God, took us out from there with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm. If the Holy One, blessed be He, had not taken our fathers out of Egypt, then we, our children and our children's children would have remained enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. Even if all of us were wise, all of us understanding, all of us knowing the Torah, we would still be obligated to discuss the exodus from Egypt. The Torah therefore says, 'On that day.' (Ex. 13:8) 'On that day,' however, could mean while it is yet daytime; the Torah therefore says, 'It is because of this.' Blessed is He who keeps His promise to Israel, blessed is He. For the Holy One, blessed is He, calculated the end of the bondage, in order to do as He had said to our father Abraham at the "Covenant between the Portions," as it is said: "And He said to Abraham, 'You shall know that your seed will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and they will enslave them and make them suffer, for four hundred years. But I shall also judge the nation whom they shall serve, and after that they will come out with great wealth.'" Pharaoh had issued a decree against the male children only, but Laban wanted to uproot everyone - as it is said: "The Aramean wished to destroy my father; and he [Jacob] went down to Egypt and sojourned there, few in number; and he became there a nation - great and mighty and numerous." Distinctive - Metzuyanim The Hebrew word for distinctive, metsuyan ( )מצויןmight sound familiar. It is derived from the same word as Zion ()ציון, teaching us that God’s holy city is not just a location, it is a way of life. God created a special place on earth which would be the ideal incubator for spiritual growth. The word Zion therefore describes not only where we live but how we must live. . ָאנּוס ַעל ִּפי ַה ִּדּבּור- ְמה ָ ֵרד ִמ ְצ ַרי ֶ ַוי "And he sojourned there" - this teaches that our father Jacob did not go down to Egypt to settle, but only to live there temporarily. Thus it is said, "They said to Pharaoh, We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks because the hunger is severe in the land of Canaan; and now, please, let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen." (Gen. 47:4) ָאבינּו ִ ַעקֹב ֲ ְמ ַל ֵּמד ֶׁשֹלא יַָרד י- ׁשם ָ ַוָּיגָר :ּא ַמר ֱ ֶׁש ֶנ,ֵּע ְּב ִמ ְצַריִם ֶא ָּלא ָלגּור ָׁשם ַ ְל ִה ְׁש ַּתק ִּכי ֵאין,ָארץ ָּבאנּו ֶ ָלגּור ָּב,ַּרעֹה ְּאמרּו ֶאל פ ְ ַו ֹי ִּכי ָכ ֵבד ָהָר ָעב,צּאן ֲא ֶׁשר ַל ֲע ָבֶדיָך ֹ ִמְר ֶעה ַל .ּשן ֶ ֵׁשבּו נָא ֲע ָבֶדיָך ְּב ֶאֶרץ ֹג ְ ְו ַע ָּתה י.ָען ַ ְּב ֶאֶרץ ְּכנ "Few in number" - as it is said: "Your fathers went down to Egypt with seventy persons, and now, the Lord, your God, has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven." (Deut. 10:22) ֶפׁש ֶ ְּב ִׁש ְב ִעים נ:ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכ ַמה ֶּׁש ֶנ- תי ְמ ָעט ֵ ִּב ְמ ֹלהיָך ֶ ְו ַע ָּתה ָׂש ְמָך ְיָי ֱא,ְמה ָ בֹותיָך ִמ ְצָרי ֶ יְָרדּו ֲא .כֹוכ ֵבי ַה ָּׁש ַמיִם ָלרֹב ְ ְּכ "And he became there a nation" - this teaches that Israel was distinctive there. ִׂשָר ֵאל ְמ ֻצָּינִים ְ ְמ ַל ֵּמד ֶׁש ָהיּו י- ׁשם ְלגֹוי ָ ְהי ִ ַוי .ָׁשם "Great, mighty" - as it is said: "And the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, and multiplied and became very, very mighty, and the land became filled with them." (Ex. 1:7) ִׂשָר ֵאל ָּפרּו ְ ּובנֵי י ְ :ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכמה ֶּׁש ֶנ- ָעצּום,ָגּדֹול ַּת ָּמ ֵלא ִ ו,ּע ְצמּו ִּב ְמאֹד ְמאֹד ַ ּׁשְרצּו ַו ִיְּרּבּו ַוַי ְ ַו ִי .ֹתם ָ ָארץ א ֶ ָה "And numerous" - as it is said: "I caused you to thrive like the plants of the field, and you increased and grew and became very beautiful your bosom fashioned and your hair grown long, but you were naked and bare." (Ezekiel 16:6) ְר ָב ָבה ְּכ ֶצ ַמח ַה ָּׂשֶדה:ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכ ַמה ֶּׁש ֶנ- ָרב ָו ,ֹאי ַּב ֲע ִדי ֲעָדיִים ִ ַּתב ָ ַּת ְג ְּד ִלי ו ִ ַּתְר ִּבי ו ִ ו,ְת ִּתיְך ַנ . ְו ַא ְּת ֵערֹם ְו ֶעְריָה,ּוׂש ָעֵרְך ִצ ֵּמ ַח ְ ָׁשַדיִם ָנכֹנּו ֹמר ַ ָוא,ּבֹוס ֶסת ְּבָד ָמיְִך ֶ ָאְר ֵאְך ִמ ְת ֶ ָא ֱעבֹר ָע ַליְִך ו ֶו .חיִי ֲ ֹמר ָלְך ְּבָד ַמיְִך ַ ָוא,חיִי ֲ ָלְך ְּבָד ַמיְִך 15 Magid - מגיד Egyptians treated us badly The Hebrew word for bad here also contains the exact opposite meaning, ‘friendship.’ The Haggadah is making a subtle observation and describing the origins of Hebrew slavery. At first the Egyptians befriended the Jews and only gradually did they begin to institute discriminatory laws, persecution and finally slavery – but it started with friendship. This pattern has repeated itself throughout Jewish history where a host nation invites Jews in and offers protection, but as the generations go on, the hospitality runs out and anti-Semitism begins to appear. The pattern always follows Genesis (12:3) "Those who bless you will be blessed and those who curse you will be cursed." As soon as the host country begins to curse the Jews through discrimination and persecution, its days are numbered and it soon follows the trajectory established first by the Egyptians: from a major world empire to a historical footnote. "The Egyptians treated us badly and they made us suffer, and they put hard work upon us." (Deut. 26:6) ִּתנּו ָע ֵלינּו ְ ַוי,ְעּנּונּו ַ ה ִּמ ְצ ִרים ַוי ַ ֹתנּו ָ ַוָי ֵּרעּו א .ׁשה ָ ֹדה ָק ָ ֲעב "The Egyptians treated us badly" - as it is said: Come, let us act cunningly with the people lest they multiply and, if there should be a war against us, they will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the land." (Ex. 1:11) ּׂשימּו ָע ָליו ָׂשֵרי ִ ַוָי:ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכ ָמה ֶׁש ֶנ- ְעּנּונּו ַ ַוי ּבן ָעֵרי ִמ ְס ְּכנֹות ֶ ַו ִי.ֹלתם ָ ִמ ִּסים ְל ַמ ַען ַע ֹנּתֹו ְּב ִס ְב . ֶאת ִּפתֹם ְו ֶאת ַר ַע ְמ ֵסס.ְל ַפְרעֹה "And they put hard work upon us" - as it is said: "The Egyptians made the children of Israel work with rigor." (Ex. 1:22) ָּכל:ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכ ָמה ֶׁש ֶנ. ֵאּלּו ַה ָּבנִים- מ ֵלנּו ָ ְו ֶאת ֲע .ַה ֵּבן ַה ִיּּלֹוד ַה ְיאָֹרה ַּת ְׁש ִליכֻהּו ְו ָכל ַה ַּבת ְּת ַחּיּון "And our oppression" - this refers to the pressure, as it is said: "I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them." (Ex. 3:9) ְוגַם:ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכ ָמה ֶׁש ֶנ, זֶה ַה ְּד ַחק- ח ֵצנּו ֲ ְו ֶאת ַל .ֹתם ָ ֹלח ִצים א ֲ יתי ֶאת ַה ַּל ַחץ ֲא ֶׁשר ִמ ְצַריִם ִ ָר ִא "The Lord took as out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with a great manifestation, and with signs and wonders." (Deut. 26:8) ֹע ַ ּוב ְזר ִ ָקה ָ חז ֲ ַּיֹוצ ֵאנּו ְיָי ִמ ִמ ְצ ַריִם ְּביָד ִ ו .תים ִ ֹפ ְ ּובמ ְ ּובאֹתֹות ְ ,ּובמ ָֹרא ָּגדֹל ְ ,נְטּויָה "The Lord took us out of Egypt" - not through an angel, not through a seraph and not through a messenger. The Holy One, blessed be He, did it in His glory by Himself. Thus it is said: "In that night I will pass through the land of Egypt, and I will smite every first-born in the land of Egypt, from man to beast, and I will carry out judgments against all the gods of Egypt, I the Lord." We often refer to His Presence as the שכינה- she-khee-NA which comes from the word שכן- sha-KHEN, meaning a close neighbor, alluding to our close, personal relationship with the Almighty. "I will pass through the land of Egypt" - I and not an angel; ֲאנִי- הּזֶה ַ ְלה ָ ּתי ְב ֶא ֶרץ ִמ ְצ ַריִם ַּב ַּלי ִ ְו ָע ַב ְר ְוֹלא ַמ ְל ָאְך "And I will smite every first-born in the land of Egypt" - I and not a seraph; ֲאנִי ְוֹלא- יתי ָּכל ְבכֹור ְּב ֶא ֶרץ ִמ ְצ ַריִם ִ ְו ִה ֵּכ ָׂשָרף "And I will carry out judgments against all the gods of Egypt" - I and not a messenger; ֲאנִי- ׁש ָפ ִטים ְ ׂשה ֶ ֹלהי ִמ ְצ ַריִם ֶא ֱע ֵ א ֱ ּוב ָכל ְ .יח ַ וֹלא ַה ָּׁש ִל "I - the Lord" - it is I, and none other. .ַאחר ֵ ֲאנִי הּוא וֹלא- אנִי ְיָי ֲ "With a strong hand" - this refers to the pestilence as it says, "Behold, the hand of the Lord will be upon your livestock in the field, upon the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds and the flocks, a very severe pestilence." (Ex. 9:3) ִה ֵנּה יַד ְיָי:ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכ ָמה ֶׁש ֶנ, זֹו ַהֶּד ֶבר- ָקה ָ חז ֲ ְּביָד ,חמִֹרים ֲ ַּב,ּסּוסים ִ ַּב,הֹויָה ְּב ִמ ְקנְָך ֲא ֶׁשר ַּב ָּׂשֶדה . ֶד ֶבר ָּכ ֵבד ְמאֹד,צּאן ֹ ּוב ַ ַּב ָּב ָקר,ְּמ ִּלים ַ ַּבג "And with an outstretched arm" - this refers to the sword, as it says, "His sword was drawn, in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem." (I Chronicles ְו ַחְרּבֹו:ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכ ָמה ֶׁש ֶנ, זֹו ַה ֶחֶרב- ֹע נְטּויָה ַ ּוב ְזר ִ .ְרּוש ַליִם ָ נְטּויָה ַעל י,לּופה ְּביָדֹו ָ ְׁש "And with a great manifestation" - this refers to the revelation of the Divine Presence, as it says, "Has any God ever tried to take for himself a nation from the midst of another nation, with trials, signs and wonders, with war and with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great manifestations, like all that the Lord your God, did for you in Egypt before your eyes." (Ex. 4:17) Spill three drops of wine and say: Spilling Wine ְו ֶאת:ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכ ָמה ֶׁש ֶנ, זֶה ַה ַּמטֶּה- ּובאֹתֹות ְ ֲא ֶׁשר ַּת ֲע ֶׂשה ּבֹו ֶאת,ַה ַּמטֶּה ַהּזֶה ִּת ַּקח ְּבי ְָדָך .אתֹת ֹ ָה "And wonders" - this refers to the blood, as it says, "And I shall show wonders in heaven and on earth. (Joel 3:3) ָת ִּתי ַ ְונ:ּא ַמר ֱ ְּכ ָמה ֶׁש ֶנ, זֶה ַהָּדם- תים ִ ֹפ ְ ּובמ ְ .ָארץ ֶ ּוב ָ מֹופ ִתים ַּב ָּׁש ַמיִם ְ Blood , and fire, and pillars of smoke ׁשן ָ ימרֹות ָע ְ ת ִ ְו- ָאׁש ֵ ו- ָּדם Another explanation: "Strong hand" indicates two plagues; "Outstretched arm," another two; "Great manifestation," another two; "Signs," another two; and "Wonders," another two. ֹע נְטּויָה ַ ּוב ְזר ִ , ְׁש ַּתיִם- ָקה ָ חז ֲ ְּביָד:ַאחר ֵ ָד ָבר - ּובאֹתֹות ְ , ְׁש ַּתיִם- ּובמ ָֹרא ָּגדֹל ְ , ְׁש ַּתיִם. ְׁש ַּתיִם- תים ִ ֹפ ְ ּובמ ְ ,ְׁש ַּתיִם We spill a drop of wine to symbolically empty our cup and even shed a tear for the suffering experienced by the Egyptians. We are taught not to rejoice at the downfall of our enemy, but to emphasize with universal feelings of sympathy and compassion. Our national experience of slavery taught us to love and care for all of God’s children. The Torah puts it all into perspective for us, "You shall not abhor an Egyptian, for you were strangers in their land." (Ex. 14:31) Now, how often were they smitten by 'the finger'? Ten plagues. The Hebrew word ‘Dayenu’ loosely means ‘It would have been enough for us to say thanks.' Here is a modern twist on an ancient song (feel free to add your own verses): If we had returned to Israel after two thousand years and had not established the State of Israel – Dayenu! If we had established the State of Israel and had not made the desert bloom – Dayenu! If we had made the desert bloom and had not absorbed millions of Jewish immigrants – Dayenu! If we had absorbed millions of Jewish immigrants and had not revived the Hebrew language – Dayenu! Rabbi Akiva said: How do we know that each individual plague which the Holy One, blessed be He, brought upon the Egyptians in Egypt consisted of five plagues? The world’s holiest city, Jerusalem - ירושלים- has the word שלוםat its core which explains why the Temple was constructed in a very special manner: "hammers, chisels or any iron instruments were not heard in the Temple when it was being built" (I Kings 6:7). No instruments of war or violence were not used so that peace would be built into the very foundation of Jerusalem’s holy Temple. Jerusalem is meant to be the source for all peace on earth, for when Jerusalem is at peace, the whole world is at peace. Messiah If you rearrange the Hebrew letters of the word for Messiah, משיח, you get ישמח/ yee-sa-makh, ‘he will rejoice.’ With the arrival of the Moshiach (Messiah), the whole world will finally be at peace, God will be universally recognized and true happiness will come to the entire world. (Ps. 35:10) Who can be likened to You, who is equal to You, who can be compared to You, the great, mighty, awesome God, God most high, Possessor of heaven and earth. We will laud You, praise You and glorify You, and we will bless Your holy Name, as it is said: "A Psalm by David; bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy Name." Born in Columbus, Ohio, he was educated in New York and Jerusalem (Yeshiva College, Cardozo School of Law and Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary). Rabbi Weisz returned to the Buckeye state and to the synagogue he grew up in, which his grandfather led for close to fifty years, serving as the rabbi of the Beth Jacob Congregation from 2006-2011. Upon making Aliyah to Israel in August 2011, Rabbi Weisz started Teach for Israel, an organization empowering local rabbis to teach about the religious significance of Israel to Jews and non-Jews. He also founded Israel365, connecting people to Israel each day through inspiring Biblical passages and stunning photos of the Land. Israel365 was ranked by the New York Jewish Week as one of the top Jewish iPhone apps of 2011. Tuly and his wife Abby, have three wonderful children and live in Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel.
