It has been a great year thus far at Forsgate.
With moderate temperatures throughout the
season, the golf courses have remained in
excellent condition during the summer. The clear
days provided for endless opportunities to enjoy the pool and
sports complex, as well as dining on the terrace under the new
awning. Aside from the spectacular weather, additional highlights
at the club have included:

While I do not possess the wonderfully artistic
writing prowess of the great American novelist,
Nathaniel Hawthorne, I think we can all agree
in his thoughtful writing that autumn is truly a
wonderful season. It is this time of year that
affords us a bountiful harvest of beautiful days
to enjoy many outdoor activities.
Obviously, autumn is a great time to tee it up on
the Banks and Palmer Courses.
Itʼs also a terrific time to showcase your Club by
bringing your guests over to play golf on colorful
tree lined fairways and cap it off with a relaxing
lunch or dinner in The Tartan Grille. It also
provides an opportune time to refer a new Member to the Club, for which you will be recognized

September and October are
the months of the year where
we undertake large projects on the golf courses.
We will continue the project of refurbishing the
bunker banks on the Banks Course. We intend
to refurbish several bunkers that will complete
the upgrades to the green complexes, such as
on the right side of #13 (after completing work on
the left side 3 years ago), and the large bunker
that partially surrounds #15 (after we successfully beautified the right bunker 2 years ago).
We also plan on changing the 5th tee on the
Banks Course. It has two tiers, but the back tier
is much too small for the amount of play it
receives. We will expand the back tier, widening
it in the process. The tee will still have two tiers,
but they will be of equal size. The scope of that
work is too large for our in-house team, so we
will be using a golf course construction company for those modifications. Another tee that
needs attention is the forward tee on #10. That
tee was created to accommodate the red tee
markers after some complaints about the carry
to the fairway. Since then, the white tees have
been added to that tee box, making it feel
cramped. Our in-house team intends to build a
larger additional tee between that forward tee
and the original tee.
There are a few areas on the Palmer Course
that need improving, but none more than the
area between the 4th green and the fairway
bunker on #13. That project will follow the outline of the Palmer Course master plan, created
by our golf course architect Stephen Kay. It will
entail removing trees, shaping soil, creating
grass bunkers, installing irrigation and sodding.
We can do some of it in-house, but various
contractors will do the bulk of the heavy lifting.
September 4th begins our aerification schedule
when we aerify the Banks Course greens
immediately following the Schiavone Cup. As I
have mentioned before, aerification is a necessary process to relieve compaction and create
pore space in the soil for oxygen, water and
nutrients to easily move throughout. It also removes thatch that has built up over the season.

When we aerify, we use a machine that punches
hollow tines into the soil surface and removes a
core of grass, thatch and soil. On the greens, we
will remove those cores and fill the core holes
with sand, creating the aforementioned pore
space as well as breaking down the thatch layer.
We also spread bentgrass seed at that time,
hoping to change the percentage of bentgrass
to annual bluegrass. The grass grows over the
core hole quickly this time of year, returning the
green to a smooth putting surface in about 2 weeks.
The Banks Course fairways will be aerified on
September 24th. We contract an aerification
company to aerify our fairways. They have the
equipment and manpower to complete a course
in one day, when it would take our in-house team
up to two weeks. The Palmer Course greens
and fairway aerification are scheduled for the
same day, September 29th.
