Administrators’ Message
This month, we celebrate Thanksgiving and we have many things to
be thankful for. First of all, we had a very smooth start to the school
year. On the first day of school, all of our students were in their
classrooms and ready for a full day of learning by 8:45 am. That is
incredible! Our Meet the Staff/Curriculum Evening was a huge
success and we welcomed many families. Our gym was full, which was so nice to see. As
well, the entire school participated in the Terry Fox Run on September 24 and students raised
close to $700.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Lastly, we are thankful for the time that Father
Michael Mireau was with as. Our adored District chaplain passed away on Monday,
September 22. Although we are mourning, we are so very grateful for the short amount of time
that he was with us.
We would like to say a special thank you to our many parent volunteers. You make such a
difference in our school! Thank you to Ms. Bonny Quast who helped out on school picture day.
Thank you to those parents who volunteer in our classrooms. We are so grateful for all you
do! Thank you, as well, to all parents who attended our School Council Meeting on September
24. It was wonderful to meet and collaborate regarding the decisions that affect your childrens’
education.
This month, we are looking forward to Read-In Week which takes place in early October. We
have a variety of activities planned, including many guest readers. This month, we also look
forward to our Thanksgiving celebration. The celebration will take place in our school gym on
Tuesday, October 14 at 9:00 am. As always, parents are more than welcome to join us.
On behalf of the staff, we would like to wish each of our students and their families a very
happy and blessed Thanksgiving holiday.

Father Michael Mireau
It has been a difficult week for the
Edmonton Catholic School District with the
passing of our beloved district chaplain,
Father Michael Mireau. His battle with
cancer took him on a challenging journey
that he shared openly with us in order that
we might grow in our knowledge of how faith
can carry us through adversity and pain; in
the end bringing us all comfort and solace.
The outpouring of affection was really a celebration of his life. There were messages to our
district website, posts on Facebook and Twitter as well as extensive coverage that culminated
with his funeral being livestreamed on Global, CTV and CBC, as well as by the archdiocese
and district.
“Father Catfish,” as he was affectionately known, had a passion for youth. He committed his
life to showing them the beauty and importance of Jesus in their lives. He often said it was his
“dream” job ministering to students and staff. His legacy and his dog Nemo are part of the
fabric of Edmonton Catholic Schools. We have been touched by the warmth of so many people
and we thank you for helping us honour this remarkable individual.
As Father Mike always said,
“God is love.” May he always be
embraced in the fullness of this
love.
Joan Carr, superintendent,
Edmonton Catholic Schools
Sincerely,
Joan Carr

Office Hours
Our school office is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Parents who call the school
after these hours are asked to leave a clear message and we will return your call
as soon as we are able to.
Please remember that we will be happy to give your child a message during the lunch break or
at the end of the day. We thank you for your understanding of our wanting to protect learning
time for all students by not interrupting classes for messages.

Emergency Communications
At the Edmonton Catholic School District, the safety of our students is always our first priority
and students are well supervised when they are on school property. When
situations occur that warrant emergency procedures to ensure the safety of all
students, we will provide parents with accurate and up to date information. One
way to keep parents informed about an emergency and the safety procedures
that have been put into place is by posting the information on the school website.
Information will be posted and updated as required when a school is

experiencing an emergency. We also need to keep phone lines available at the school during
an emergency, so we ask that you do not call the school. This will enable the staff at the
school to keep in touch with emergency providers and District personnel.
Thank you for your support and help in ensuring our students remain safe.
Provincial Achievement Test Results
The results for the 2013-2014 Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Tests are in.
Most results show an increase in overall averages from the previous year’s
results in terms of Acceptable Standard and Standard of Excellence. These
areas are highlighted below. Out of the 8 categories, Annunciation School
increased their scores in 2014 in 4 categories. This increase is a direct result
of the hard work of our students and teachers and is a testament to the
strength of our IB program. We are very proud of our students and staff.

READ-IN 2014: READ – Escape to New Worlds!
“Reading can take you on adventures…Reading will challenge your mind and put you
on a journey where you meet new people, explore new cultures, and live the life of a
hero.”
~READ-IN Edmonton~
Annunciation students and staff are very excited for READ-IN Week 2014 which will run from
October 6th - 10th. The READ-IN 2014 theme is Escape to New Worlds! The purpose of
READ-IN is to create a greater awareness of the importance of reading and to involve the
community in READ-IN events. We have quite the line-up of special guests coming in!
Historically, the event has successfully promoted the school as an important place for the
development of lifelong literacy.
With this thought in mind, the staff and students of Annunciation Catholic School invite you to
share our commitment to reading by helping us celebrate literacy. This is a chance for you “to
get away from it all” and read to students. Perhaps you might like to share a favourite book,
read a book from our library or bring a book of your own to read. If you are interested in
coming in, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher. A special thanks to Mr. Estephan
and Mr. Edwards for their work in organizing the event at our school.
Running Team
Congratulations to all students who joined the Annunciation Running
Club. Our running club members worked hard over the past month
training for the cross country run that was held at Hawrelak Park on
Monday, September 22. We are happy to report that all the students
achieved their goal and completed the race. The running team will also
be training for other events throughout the year. A special thanks goes

IB News October 2014
Our Learner Profile this month is KNOWLEDGEABLE: people have spent time in our
school exploring themes, which have global relevance and importance. In doing so, they have
acquired a critical mass of significant knowledge. “But how do you know?” children often ask.
As we mature and grow, we begin to question the idea of knowing. We want to know not only
who possesses knowledge and how people show others how we know. This knowledge
includes the notion of intelligence and awareness of this intelligence. It begins when students
can say of themselves or others, “Wow, am I smart!” or, “Wow, are they smart!” At
Annunciation School, we use the following statements with students to explain the IB-Learner
Profile of Knowledgeable: “I explore big ideas that are important. I know and can do a lot of
important things,” or this version, “I have learned many things. I can tell you about /show you
these things. I can use this information to solve problems in life.”
Curriculum Connections with the Learner Profile
KNOWLEDGEABLE—in Language Arts
People who are knowledgeable understand the structure of languages and the
various influences on its development. They have experienced a wide variety of
literature.
KNOWLEDGEABLE –in Mathematics
9|Page
October, 2014
Knowledgeable people know about a coherent body of interconnected mathematical
understandings and the role of mathematics in the development of science,
technology, and society in general.
KNOWLEDGEABLE –in Science & Technology
Those who are knowledgeable have a body of significant scientific knowledge and
an understanding of important concepts.
KNOWLEDGEABLE --in Social Studies
Knowledgeable people have acquired a body of knowledge and developed a depth
of understanding about how the social world works, including its systems and
institutions. They also understand the needs, rights, and responsibilities of
individuals and groups.

How can parents help to develop students who are knowledgeable?
Encourage your child to read books at home that correspond with the topics being covered in
school. In particular, books in their mother tongue will help your child make more meaningful,
lasting connections to what is being taught in their classroom in English.
Ask your child about what they are learning in school and engage them in conversations about
it by asking questions such as, “Why do you think that is an important thing to know about?” or,
“Can you think of anything happening in the world today that might be similar to that aspect of
History?” or, “You’re learning about pulleys and gears at school? This reminds me of your
simple machines unit in Grade 4… have you noticed any similarities? How is what you’re
learning different?”
Foster any area that your child expresses an interest in with books and activities, but also be
sure to encourage them to explore other areas.
10 | P a g e
October, 2014
Encourage your child to become familiar with current events and to read the newspaper and
watch the news when appropriate.
Catch your child being knowledgeable. Make sure your child knows he/she has done
something good. Expressing your approval is a powerful way to reinforce the profiles.
As always we welcome questions about the IB programme in our school. Sarah L’Hoir is the

IB Learner Profile Attribute Certificates
The IB learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for
the 21st Century. These values infuse all elements of the Primary Years Programme (PYP)
and serve to inspire, motivate and focus the work of the students and teachers, uniting them in
a common purpose.
There are 10 learner profile attributes, and our school focuses on one each month. Students
are asked to reflect on their growth of each learner profile attribute monthly, once at the
beginning on the month, and a second time at the end of the month. To recognize students for
their efforts and growth, the teacher will select a student(s) to receive a certificate. All students
will be commended for their self-assessment and growth at least once throughout the year. If
your child has been selected to accept a certificate, his/her homeroom teacher will contact you
with a date and time so that you may also enjoy celebrating their development of a particular
attribute. The following is a snapshot of our monthly learner profile attribute focus:
11 | P a g e
October, 2014
The attributes and descriptors of the learner profile define the type of learner the IB hopes to
develop through its programs. IB programs promote the education of the whole person,
emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth through all domains of
knowledge. By focusing on the dynamic combination of knowledge, skills, independent critical
and creative thought and international-mindedness, the IB espouses the principle of educating
the whole person for a life of active, responsible citizenship.

Student Learning Assessments - Information for Parents
August, 2014
Note to Parents: The following information about the new Student Learning Assessments, or SLAs, was compiled
from the Alberta Education website:
http://education.alberta.ca/department/ipr/curriculum/student-learning-assessments.aspx
Parents are encouraged to consult the website for additional information, or to contact your child’s teacher or
principal.
Background
In May 2013, Education Minister Jeff Johnson announced that Alberta would be giving teachers more support
to help students succeed by introducing assessments that will replace the existing Provincial Achievement Tests
(PATs).
The new Student Learning Assessments (SLAs) contribute to realizing the vision of Inspiring Education by
enabling parents and teachers to be aware of a child’s strengths or areas needing improvement at the start of
the school year. The new SLAs will support student learning while more effectively assessing literacy, numeracy,
and competencies such as critical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to apply knowledge to different
scenarios. Alberta Education, in partnership with classroom teachers, is developing the new SLAs. They will be
administered at the start of grades 3, 6, and 9.
Timeline for Implementation
Grade 3 students will be the first to write the new assessments, with pilots starting in September 2014. Full
implementation for Grade 3 is expected by September 2015. Pilots for grades 6 and 9 are scheduled to begin in
2015 and 2016, respectively.
School authorities had a choice, school-by-school, whether to administer the Grade 3 PATs in June 2014, the
Grade 3 SLAs in September 2014, or both. Alberta Education contacted school authorities in fall 2013 to confirm
their participation in the Grade 3 PATs and/or SLAs. Almost all Grade 3 students in Alberta will write the Grade 3
pilot assessment in September 2014. Approximately 30 per cent of Grade 3 students wrote the PATs in June
2014.
Note: Edmonton Catholic Schools elected to participate in the grade 3 SLAs in September 2014, and not to
participate in the June 2014 grade 3 PATs.
For grade 6: We will participate in the September 2015 grade 6 SLAs. We will not participate in the grade 6 PATs in
June 2015.


Literacy and Numeracy
The SLAs will be provided digitally and assess students within the context of the working definitions of literacy
and numeracy that Alberta Education is currently using to guide its work:
Literacy is acquiring, creating, connecting, and communicating meaning in a wide variety of contexts; and
Numeracy is the confidence and habits of mind to engage with, critically assess, reflect upon, and apply
quantitative and spatial information when making judgments and decisions or taking action in all aspects of
daily living.
Purpose Statements
Provincial assessment programs, including SLAs, are sources of information that must be interpreted, used, and
communicated within the context of regular and continuous assessment by classroom teachers.
Structure of the Grade 3 Student Learning Assessments
Components of the Grade 3 SLAs have been determined in partnership with the Alberta School Boards
Association, Alberta School Councils Association, Alberta Teachers’ Association, College of Alberta School
Superintendents, and Alberta Assessment Consortium.
The four components of the Grade 3 SLAs are the following:
 a digitally scored literacy component;
 a literacy performance-task component;
 a digitally scored numeracy component; and
 a numeracy performance-task component.
The SLAs will reference the current provincial programs of study until the implementation of new curriculum
through the Curriculum Redesign Initiative.
English and French
The literacy components of the SLAs are being developed independently for English, French Immersion, and
Francophone students. The numeracy portions are being developed in English, and the French Immersion and
Francophone versions will be translations of the English version. Grade 3 students take the SLAs in the language
of their instruction (i.e., Grade 3 Francophone students will take only the French components).
Length
The SLAs are being designed to provide teachers with scheduling flexibility. While none of the Grade 3 SLA
components will be timed when students write them, the components will each be designed for students to
typically complete within 60 minutes. For example, teachers may wish to complete the digitally scored
components with students in more than one session. The SLA components for grades 6 and 9 students will likely
have longer administration times.
The two digitally scored components of the Grade 3 SLAs will consist of item formats such as multiple choice,
numerical response, and short answer, as well as new and innovative formats that leverage the digital platform,
including drag-and-drop, rearrangement, and highlighting.
Student Learning Assessment Administration and Results
Administration
The Student Learning Assessments (SLAs) are being designed to be administered digitally. A window of
approximately 10 days, near the start of the school year, will provide schools with the opportunity to decide
when it will be best for students to complete the assessments. It is crucial to remember that since the
assessments are being administered at the beginning of those grades, the outcomes that will be assessed come
from the previous years’ programs of studies (i.e., grades 2, 5, and 8).
Results
Results of the SLAs will be available within 24 hours for teachers, within one month for schools and school
authorities, and annually for the province. SLA results will reflect the literacy and numeracy categories
(Awareness, Knowledge and Understanding, and Strategies). Alberta Education plans to provide an assessment
framework that matches outcomes from the provincial Programs of Study with the Literacy and Numeracy
Benchmarks developed as part of Curriculum Redesign. This assessment framework will both guide the
development of the assessments and allow teachers to interpret assessment results.

Re: Expansion of Alberta’s Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Immunization Program
The Alberta Ministry of Health has announced the expansion of the human papillomavirus (HPV)
immunization program from grade five girls only to also include males in grade 5 beginning in
September 2014. In addition, HPV immunization for grade nine boys will start in the 2014-2015
school year and continue for four years to June 2018. This immunization initiative will lead to a
significant long term reduction in HPV-related cancers in both males and females.
Expanding the HPV program to males will save lives, reduce disease and decrease future health
care costs in Alberta. Recent data from Alberta shows that almost 100% of oropharyngeal head
and neck cancers in men under 40 years of age are HPV-related.
Medical experts have recommended implementation of school-based HPV immunization
programs across Canada. School-based immunization generally results in higher numbers of
students completing the immunization and being protected from HPV disease. HPV immunization
is voluntary and the signed consent of a parent or guardian is required before the immunization
can occur at the school.
Is there anything that can help parents make a decision?
In support of the HPV immunization program, Alberta Health Services has developed an
interactive, online resource to provide parents with the information to make an informed HPV
immunization decision for their child. The HPV Vaccination Decision Tool contains important
information about HPV disease, the HPV vaccine, and the benefits and risks associated with the
HPV vaccine. The decision tool is available at: http://albertapreventscancer.ca/resource/hpv-andhpv-vaccine. As well, information for the public is available on ImmunizeAlberta.ca at
immunizealberta.ca/i-need-know-more/diseases-covered/hpv-human-papillomavirus.
Alberta Health Services or First Nations Inuit Health Branch Public Health will be sharing or have
already shared this information with school principals in your jurisdictions via a similar letter from
Medical Officers of Health or through the Public Health Nurses assigned to their schools.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation and assistance in making this new immunization
program a success. If you have any questions about the HPV immunization program, please
