Archdiocese of Philadelphia Consultation of the Clergy and Faithful for the 2015 Synod of Bishops in Rome Pope Francis has called for an Ordinary Synod of Bishops in October 2015 on the theme, The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World. The General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops, following a practice that typically anticipates every Synod, invites consultation on this topic to assist with its preparations. A Preparatory Document has been issued by the Holy See to initiate this consultation along with a series of questions. Archbishop Chaput, in an effort to provide an opportunity for the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to engage in this consultation in as wide a manner as possible has authorized the use of this instrument for local participation. The clergy and faithful are asked to read the complete Preparatory Document, or its summary, on the Archdiocesan website and then answer any or all of the questions that follow by visiting www.archphila.org Page Two - 139 COMMUNION CALLS: Visitation with Holy Communion of the sick and confined is done once a month. The tasks are simple – holding the door as people arrive, greeting them with a smile and a pleasant “Good Morning or Welcome.” We are asking you to consider taking this on as a Ministry of Hospitality at the Mass you normally attend over the weekend. Our hope is to have someone at each door for all of our Masses. We currently have Ministers at the main entrance of Church. Consider joining those who presently are there each weekend to greet us. Sign-up sheets are on the tables. We will be in touch with those who are interested in this ministry. No, this is not the topic of discussion for our Lenten Night of Reflection, but don’t overlook what might have been your best gift. Most families received a copy of Pope Francis’s book, The Joy of the Gospel the Sunday before Christmas. We will use the Introduction of his book for our Night of Reflection and Sharing. Pope Francis truly loves the poor and marginalized of our world which comes through in his writings. In his infallible way, he points out ways for all of us to evangelize in our modern lives, whereby we renew our own faith. Pope Francis challenges the Church and us to change the way we think. Read The Joy of the Gospel, find out what the Lord asks of us in life and consider attending the Lenten Night of Reflection. Save this date, March 9 for the Lenten Night of Reflection. BOXTOPS - If you have been saving those Boxtops, now is the time to deposit them in the Boxtops box in the front of the Church. Or you can give them to your favorite St. Albert's student to submit. We need to mail them towards the end of February to get credit for them in April. Thank you for your past participation, and keep clipping those Boxtops. Any questions, call Nancy Komada at 215-908-2259. PAGE 4 – 0139 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners, The Gospel describes Our Lord in the midst of His Public Ministry. He teaches, heals the sick, expels demons, and proclaims the good news to all who come to Him. Through the ministry of the Church, Jesus continues His proclamation of the Kingdom, and through the Church works of mercy, He continues to touch, heal and feed those who are suffering. For more than half-a-century, the Catholic Charities Appeal has provided assistance, relief and hope to an astonishing number of families, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, the homeless, and countless others who have no one else to whom they can turn. This important work of the Church is funded mostly through the generous support and sacrifices of the faithful of the Archdiocese. Fiscal difficulties have had a terrible effect on many people, but most particularly, those who are in greater need. Each year, we are asked to support the works of mercy by which Our Lord displays His care for those in need. Pope Francis reminds us of our need as Christians to show solidarity with those less fortunate. Through solidarity, we have “the ability to make what we have, our humble capacities, available to God.” The Holy Father adds, “For only in sharing, in giving, will our lives be fruitful.” Archbishop Chaput has set an overall goal of $10 million for this year’s Catholic Charities Appeal. Last year, Saint Albert the Great Parish raised $41,600 from 424 gifts. The generosity of the people of our parish is deeply moving and I am confident that we will continue to give hope to people who face difficulties by supporting the 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal. To view the informational video, for further information, or to contribute online, please visit catholiccharitiesappeal.org. May God bless you! Sincerely yours in Christ, Monsignor Duncan Readings for Sunday, February 15, 2015: Lev 13:1-2, 44-36 Ps 32 1 Cor 10:31-11:1 Mk 1:40-45 In today’s gospel, Jesus does not treat the leper with disgust. He does not turn His back on Him and run away. Rather, the gospel tells us that He was “moved with pity” by him. Jesus had compassion on his suffering. He felt empathy for the rejection and loneliness he had been living with for so many years. He sympathized with the leper because He had experienced the same rejection and loneliness Himself. Not only was Jesus moved by the leper’s pitiable condition, but also by his unshakeable faith. Though this leper would have been used to people turning away from him, He trusted that Jesus was different. He ran up to Jesus knowing that he would be accepted by Him. He also believed that Jesus had the power to heal him. The power of his faith as well as his desperate condition would have made Jesus willing to stretch out His hand to heal Him. Every one of us has some form of leprosy, some condition that makes us feel inferior to others. It could be a physical illness or disability. It could be a psychological condition such as depression or anxiety. It could be a spiritual condition such as addiction or sinful habits. No matter what it is that makes us feel as though we do not belong, Jesus wants us to know that He loves and accepts us just as we are. Though we struggle to hide our weaknesses from others, we cannot hide them from Him. He sees us as we are and loves us just the same. Moreover, He understands us because He suffered with many of the same vulnerabilities and temptations we do. No matter what, He will never turn us away. Archdiocese of Philadelphia Catholic Charities Appeal 2015 The Catholic Charities Appeal raises the dollars necessary to fund the human service programs of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. These programs serve persons within the five counties that compromise the Archdiocese (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia). Agencies, institutions, and programs funded by the Catholic Charities Appeal serve people of all faiths, regardless of race, sex, age, disability, national or ethnic origin, or ability to pay. The services that the Archdiocese provides reflect a belief in the sanctity of human life, the dignity of the individual, and the central role of the family in life and society. Funds raised through the annual solicitation are used to underwrite the financial costs for designated agencies, institutions, and programs. The Catholic Charities Appeal provides individuals an opportunity to practice stewardship by sharing gifts of time, talent and treasure.. FROM THE PRINCIPAL - Congratulations to our December Peacemakers whose teachers chose them for showing gratitude- the virtue of the month-- in their daily routines: Kindergarten Zoe Martin First Grade Danielle Carradorini Second Grade Connor Bee Third Grade Christopher Fyke Fourth Grade Angelina Gorman Fifth Grade Patrick Clemens Sixth Grade Kelly McPoyle Seventh Grade Nicholas Kaminski Eighth Grade Alyssa Woertz Congratulations also to Adrienne Nicastro whose Landscape painting is the Principal’s Masterpiece for the month. Her picture is framed and will hang in my office for the next month. We had so many wonderful moments during Catholic School Week, but the highlights were our Talent Shows. For the first time, in addition to our talent show for grades 5 to 8, we had one for grades Pre-K to 4, with performers from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. It was amazing to see a second grader play the Star Wars theme on the piano or a fourth grader hoola hoop to Happy by Pharrell Williams. Then there was the fourth grader who sang Titanium without any musical accompaniment. Two boys in fifth grade did magic tricks and before they went on stage, one of the boys said that “he was not nervous” because he was “just performing before all of his friends.” In total, 32 students performed on stage and every one had a big smile afterwards— it was only me whose eyes had tears in them! ATTENTION ALL FAMILIES OF 3RD AND 5TH GRADERS - Mark your calendars – Sunday, March 15 – from 4 to 6 PM We are planning a Family Event for you. Most of you have experienced the Family Nights in connection with preparation for First Communion and for Advent. We’d like to build on that family experience and offer you another opportunity to come together as a family in preparation for the Feast of Easter. At this time we ask you to mark this on your calendars – it will be a great gift to you and your family as we prepare for Easter during the Lenten Season. HOLLEN FUNERAL HOMES, INC. Thomas J.
