Navi Mumbai, Aurangabad civic elections to be fought together By Chandrashekhar Hendve VASHI: Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena, who are in alliance at the center and in Maharashtra, will fight the crucial civic elections also as allies. Presently they are likely to fight Navi Mumbai and Aurangabad civic elections together. The initiative is said to have come from none other than the Sena chief Udhav Thackeray. And the response from BJP was instant. The party’s state unit president Raosaheb Danave called on Udhav at Ma- toshree where the alliance was ‘almost sealed’, say reports. There was however no official announcement to the effect. The news is welcomed by one and all, especially in view of the alliance struck by the various factions of Republican Party of India. It has also electrified the workers in either party. The outlook seems to be that together, they will be able to sweep the elections. The development is also expected to end many misunderstandings and back-biting going on at the state level. It will also provide a new fillip to the working of the state government, it is felt. The traffic unit explained to the civic body the kind of hurdles they had to face particularly on busy roads and junctions. The problems here become worse especially when there are signboards and signals missing. Hence introduction of signboards and construction of signals at such places would do a lot of good to both the public and traffic policemen. There are certain roads in Navi Mumbai where vehicle drivers tend to drive their vehicles at full speed thus creating a risk for both drivers and pedestrians. It is owing to such tendencies of the vehicle drivers that so many accidents take place on these roads. One road is Thane-Belapur Road, the others are Sector 9 area of Vashi and Kopri signal junction. The traffic unit has suggested that speed breakers be constructed on these roads to control the speed of the vehicles and thus pre- traffic unit to be able to control the traffic perfectly would be to install signboards at parking and no-parking areas and also on roads which are oneway or which allows no vent accidents. The demand for speed breakers on these roads was made several times by the traffic unit but Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation authorities just didn’t seem to be in a mood to meet this demand. It is high time for NMMC to come up with speed breakers on those roads in the city where they are urgently required. The other things needed to be done for entry. The traffic unit also asked the civic body to repaint the zebra crossings on many roads in the city where the paints have faded. All these suggestions put up by traffic unit before the civic body need urgent attention and also implementation to prevent loss of lives and properties and for traffic policemen to be able to control the traffic efficiently. Man dies after getting run over a bus in CBD By Vikram Gaikwad CBD: A CBD resident, Krushna Shankar was run over by a bus transporting construction workers from Uran, killing him instantly near CBD Killah Gauthan on Wednesday. The deceased, Krushna Shankar (58) is a resident of Divale area of Belapur and at 9am of Wednesday, he was on his way to CBD creek. While he was crossing Uran road, a special bus meant for bringing workers from Uran to Kalamboli crashed into him. The accident caused him grave injuries and therefore he was admitted to local MGM Hospital immediately. The doctors however pronounced him dead as they reached the hospital. Accordingly, the bus driver, Rajkumar Radhacharan Das (22) was apprehended by CBD Police. Appointment leads to controversy Senior by-passed, junior allegedly appointed as Chief Accountant By Vijay Bhor CBD-BELAPUR: Appointment of a junior person ignoring ‘seniority’ of another has given rise to a big controversy in NMMC. Ramakant Patil, Accounts Officer gradeII has been appointed to the post of Chief Accountant recently. In doing so, senior men Jayawant Dalvi and Ashok Kusalkar, both grade-I officers, are alleged to have been bypassed. That has become a talking point in the administrative cir- cles in NMMC these days. The incident is cited to show how personal contacts and influence mongering are replacing meritocracy in the administrative hierarchy in the civic administration. CMYK By Vikram Gaikwad VASHI: Two incidents of suicide in as many days, both involving young married women have been causing consternation in police circles in the city. In the first incident in Vashi, Gita Babu Savariya (32), a resident of Sector-9, Vashi is reported to have committed suicide by hanging herself in her home on Monday afternoon. Gita lived with her husband and three children. On that fateful afternoon, she had asked her children to have their siesta in the bedroom. One they were absorbed in sleep, Gita hanged herself with a rope in the living room. When the children woke up a little later, they were shocked to see their mother hanging. Vashi police have registered a case of accidental death but find no apparent reason for her unfortunate step. In the second incident on Tuesday, Ujwala Darmaraj Bimbe (22), a resident of Saiwadi in Karave village in Nerul is said to have poured kerosene on herself and set herself afire when she was alone at home. She sustained cent per cent burns and died on the spot. Married about a year ago, she lived with her husband and in laws including a brother-in-law. Here again, the investigators are not able to find any apparent reason for the drastic step. It is believed that that she had found some (objectionable) messages in her husband’s mobile phone and deleted them the previous day and there have been some arguments over it between them. Police believe that that might have prompted her to take her own life in a fit of exasperation. NRI police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating. Starting with two wins against Pakistan and South Africa, reigning champions India have grown from strength to strength and have won all their six group matches to top Pool B and followed it up with a 109 runs in the quarter-finals against a spirited Bangladesh side. India batting prowess have ensured that 300-plus scores every time they have batted first and the bowlers too have come to party in each of these matches by dismissing the opposition in all seven matches so far. The two time champions India now confront a determined home side that has won seven of their 10 World Cup meetings against them, although Dhoni’s men secured a fivewicket win in the quarter-final at home in Ahmedabad four years ago. Their four month long sojourn on the Australian soil have only added to the confidence against the four time champions who have won all six semi-finals they have appeared in since the inaugural event in 1975, but India will consider the SCG as the best venue to halt that record. Under the leadership of their experienced skipper M S Indian skipper MS Dhoni who has 100 ODI wins under his belt knows how to win World Cups and that goes quite a long way Dhoni they know that if they manage to keep calm under pressure and win two more games they will be immortalized in the echelons of Indian sport. India will once again bank on a sound start from openers Shikhar Dhawan, who has 367 runs in the tournament with two centuries, and Rohit Sharma, who hit 137 against Bangladesh against the likes of Mitchell Starc (18 wickets) and Mitchell Johnson. Virat Kholi the elegant right-hander who hit four centuries in the preceding four-Test series, including 147 and 46 against the same rivals at the SCG will have to play a big one after his superlative knock against Pakistan in their World Cup opener (since then has scored 46, 33*, 33, 44* 38 and 3). India’s pace trio of Mohammad Shami (17 wickets) , Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma who have claimed 42 wickets between them will have to take charge against David Warner, Shane Watson or Glenn Maxell’s savage attack. It will be the spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, allrounder Ravindra Jadeja and part timer Raina that will have to shoulder prime responsibility if the pitch takes turn against Steve Smith and Australian skipper Michael Clarke who are considered the best in business while facing the slow bowlers. CMYK 6 [email protected] 26 March, 2015 www.newsband.in CR Improves It Track Sections Reliability Issue : 273 26 March, 2015 The issue of minorities It turns out that both our media and opposition parties are bigoted. Otherwise, how does one explain the publicity given to the Panvel incident where a church was attacked by miscreants? Everyone wanted us to believe that it was sponsored by the Sangh pariwar under the patronage of a BJP led government. They did not have the patience to wait for the outcome of police inquiry. Every political leader was falling over himself or herself to condemn the attack. Each one wanted us to believe that the minorities are not safe in this country after a BJP led government took over. The truth is that the unholy incident was the handiwork of a gambling den operator and he had no religious motive behind it. He was only angry that the police had acted and raided his den on the complaint of the church authorities. Will these leaders have the courtesy to say that the incident was a purely secular one, albeit criminal in nature? No doubt, Hindu organizations have issues with the minorities. They are sore with the Christians because they suspect that their missionaries are engaged in the conversion of our deprived classes. One fails to understand whether discriminatory attitude of the orthodox Hindu classes or the lure offered by the prosylitizers should be blamed for the phenomenon. Anyway, the aggressive campaign launched by a section of the Hindu leadership over ‘ghar wapsi’ or home coming looks like an effective check on it. Coming to the other contentious issue involving minorities pertains to cow slaughter or its ban. There is no dispute over the ban because it is mentioned in the IVth schedule of the constitution. The dispute is over the slaughter of cow’s progeny, the bulls and the calves. If beef has by-products like the hides and bones, so do the living animals. The cow gives us milk, the urine and dung. Both the last named have been used by the farmer as natural manure which in turn has sustained our agriculture for millenniums. If meat production has grown into an industry, so has milk production. Both have vast number of by-products. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian health care system, is squeamish about meat eating. The entire healing system is based on herbs and closely connected with nature. For many, it is a philosophy of life. For example, traditional Ayurveda practitioners believe that a cow, grazing freely in the fields, is capable of choosing the herbs needed for curing any ailment it may be suffering from at a moment. They go on to invest the dumb animal with a strong sixth sense too. For example, if there is a child back home in the keeper’s family and if it is suffering from say, fever, the cow is able to sense it without someone telling it about it. It will choose the right herb for its feed so that its essence becomes available to the child when it is milked again! So, the cow which looks like a dumb animal for the ordinary eye, doubles up a doctor here! That is why Hindus worship it. Coming to the question of old cows and bulls, they are as much of a burden as our parents are in their old age! What do we do with the latter? None of the arguments should hide the fact that we have grossly over-exploited the nature. The rate at which our forests are being destroyed is matched only by our growing population! Neither the BJP government nor the Sangh pariwar seems to have any solution to it. Instead, the propagation of some Sangh outfits that every Hindu woman should bear at least five children looks retrograde. We can’t base everything on political calculations. New letter boxes needed There is only one post office in the entire node of Airoli at sector-17. There are very few letter boxes in the node. Many are not in working condition. One such letter box is at a prime location in sector-7. The letter box is completely corroded. No one uses this letter box. Most of the residents of Airoli and neighbourhood go to the post office to post their letters. On some days like Sundays, the letter box at the post office becomes full. When it becomes full, any miscreant can put his hand to remove the letters from the box. The postal authorities should provide more letter boxes at prime locations in the node so that everyone need not come to the post office just for posting letters. Those boxes should also be maintained properly. They should replace the box at sector-7 with a new one. They should also provide another box at the post office. - Ravichandran, Airoli India should display Gut Feeling It may appear a perfect time to beat the Australians in their homeland in the semi final of the World Cup. The gut feeling is good and it is coming from our main hope Virat Kohli. But complacency should not catch up with us during the crucial time of the World’s premiere tournament. Overconfidence shown by the team from the sub continent and the team from down under may work against them in the crucial stages of the game as we witnessed in the other semi-final match. Australians think that they are favourites with 17 wins as against 4 by Team India at Sydney Cricket Ground. And again in the World cup meetings, Australians had upper hand winning 7 seven out of the 10 outings. But that and all will not matter much in a do or die situations. The dice may roll on either side and depends whether the side batting first shows great resolve to make a sufficient total to run the other side out of the match. Both the teams are led by clever and experienced captains and it appears that Australians have slight edge. War of Words, Verbal abuse or sledging is not going to make any difference. But the likes of Virat Kohli and David Warner should mend their ways and play with the spirit of the game as our own Sachin Tendulkar is the brand ambassador of the World cup 2015. - Jayanthy S.
