Volume 9 ~ Issue 1 April ~ May 2015 An Official Publication of Elks Lodge ~ 2679, Calabash, North Carolina The Sandpiper April - May 2015 Page 1 IF YOU GET & READ YOUR “SANDPIPER” ELECTRONICALLY - AND/OR - ARE ON THE LIST FOR RECEIVING E-MAIL BLASTS FROM YOUR LODGE, THEN – YOU NEED TO READ THIS AND TAKE ACTION NOW! It has come to our attention that many of our members who currently receive electronic communications such as the LINK for our “Sandpiper” Newsletter and our Weekly e-Mail Blasts are increasingly finding they have either stopped receiving these communications, or - they are winding up in their SPAM Folder. Beginning April 1, 2015, coinciding with the beginning of our new Elks year, we will be sending our Electronic Communications from a New & Different e-Mail Address: [email protected] To ensure you continue to receive all your lodge’s Electronic Communications to which you are entitled, you need to put this e-Mail address in your Address Book or Contact List, AND – “WhiteList” this address, especially if you have an ATMC e-Mail Account. These actions will ensure that e-Mail Communications emanating from the [email protected] address are successfully delivered to your In-Box without interruption. Additionally, our local Internet and e-Mail Service Provider, ATMC, installed a New SPAM Filter Program at their server level back on December 2, 2014 which has apparently compounded the problem for many of you with an ATMC e-Mail address by placing our e-Mail Blasts in Quarantine. You should contact ATMC’s Help Desk at 910-754-9506 if you need help in doing these things. You only have to do this once to ensure you successfully continue to receive electronic communications from your lodge. Good Luck! AN INTERVIEW WITH OUR NEW EXALTED RULER The Staff of the ”Sandpiper” Newsletter recently sat down for an interview with Malcolm Jaggard, our new Exalted Ruler, elected to serve for our 2015 – 2016 Elks Year. We wanted to get some personal information about the man himself for you, our valued lodge members, as well as find out if there are any specific items on his agenda he wishes to accomplish over the next year, and have him share those items with us. Following are the results of that interview. SANDPIPER: “Mr. Jaggard (Malcolm), - Congratulations on being elected Exalted Ruler of our lodge for the 2014-2015 Elks year. Let’s start with your personal background to let our readers know a little something about you. Tell us about yourself before you came to Calabash, NC, and how you got here?” JAGGARD: “My wife, Sue, who is also an Elk, and I are originally from the South of England. We originally came to the States in 1997 when we moved to Greenville, South Carolina by way of Germany. At that time I worked for Merck, Inc. and the E.I. DuPont companies, in their healthcare divisions in various sales, marketing, and planning positions. We came to this part of the country in retirement because we love being close to the ocean. We bought a home in Little River, South Carolina where we presently live.” ~ Continued on Next Page ~ The Sandpiper April – May 2015 Page 2 AN INTERVIEW WITH OUR NEW EXALTED RULER ~ Continued from Previous Page ~ Lounge Hours 4 SANDPIPER: “So, - How long have you been an Elk?” Monday –Friday 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. * JAGGARD: I have been an Elk since 2011 and was sponsored by Terry and Roger Gregorio. Saturday Noon – 9:00 p.m. * SANDPIPER: “So you have been an Elk for 4 years, and have risen to the position of Exalted Ruler of our lodge in a short time – Well Done! Why did you become an Elk in the first place?” Sunday Noon -7:00 p.m. * JAGGARD: “I have been fortunate, in that I have been blessed throughout my life with stable employment and family life. I became an Elk because I felt it was time to give back. There is no question that for me, the more time and effort one puts into charitable endeavors and community service, the more personal satisfaction one gets, and - I am sure many others feel the same. Until I was introduced to the Elks, I had no idea who they were, or for what they stood. I quickly realized that the Elks contributions to our Veterans, Youth, and Local Communities is a force with which to be reckoned. I have discovered many members of this Lodge, in particular, are more than willing to step up to help their fellow man. SANDPIPER: You have been Chairman of our Board of Directors for over 2 years, giving us your reports at our membership meetings. You have been instrumental in helping us to get our lodge back on firm financial footing. With this in mind, do you have any goals for this year, and if yes, can you share those with us? JAGGARD: My focus this year is to improve the Lodge in 3 main areas: First, - financial stability. Our finances have been under pressure for the past few years for a number of reasons. My intention is not to dwell on the past, but more to ensure that by the end of this year we rebuild our reserve fund to anticipate future improvements needed in Lodge infrastructure. All regular members will be paying extra dues this year in order to help make that happen. That is only part of the picture, as – many discretionary expenses have also been eliminated from our budget for this coming year. * Closing Times May Vary as Business Warrants Lounge Phone 910-579-4600 Lunch is Served Monday thru Friday 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Lodge Meetings Lodge Meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each Month. NOTICE A ceremony commemorating Mother’s Day will be held at the Lodge on Sunday, May 10th at 12:00 Noon. PLEASE NOTE: – The Lounge will be CLOSED until the Ceremony, which will take about 60 Minutes, has concluded. All Lodge Members are Cordially Invited to attend our Mother’s Day Ceremony. Secretary’s Corner Secondly, - membership. We have to do a better job of both retaining and recruiting new members. As I mentioned during the Officers installation in March, we now have a majority of Officers who are women, and that, I believe, is good for our Lodge and good for Elkdom in general. I challenge all spouses to step up and become full participatory members. There have been isolated instances in the past when this did not happen. I want to make it clear that this will be a priority of mine. SANDPIPER: “Anything else you wish to share with the “Sandpiper” readers?” JAGGARD: “Yes, - let’s plan on a successful year and please, let’s have some fun! SANDPIPER: “Thank you for your time today Malcolm. We all wish you, Sue, and your family well as you go forward and do Good Things for us at the Calabash Lodge and the Order of Elks. JAGGARD: “Thank You!” #### Message from the Lodge Secretary Be it resolved that Calabash Elks #2679 confer upon David S. Jenkins, Lawrence Mogielnicki and Aniello D. Vickie and I have both been extremely proud and honored to have represented the North Carolina State Elks throughout the 2014-2015 year. We have also been proud to announce we are members of Calabash Lodge #2679. As the State President, we have traveled over 5,000 miles visiting local lodges in the state and attending out-of-state functions to honor and represent the Elks of North Carolina. These trips included visiting the states of South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. We have attended many special functions to support our veterans and youth programs. I attended the state Hoop Shoot finals in Greensboro held on February 14th this year, and the Hoop Shoot Regionals held in Fredrick, Maryland on March 14, 2015. By the end of my term, I will have attended 9 of the 12 District Deputy Clinics held in the four districts of our state. I attended and represented you at all State Trustee meetings, and worked hard to help keep our state budget in proper perspective. I worked with the state communications team to produce a better state web site, and instituted the electronic version of the online newsletter at www.NCElks.Org . I look forward to seeing many of you at the Spring Convention being held in Wilmington, NC from April 30 to May 3, 2015 at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside Hotel. You will have an opportunity to meet your new President, Ron Dickson. In closing I say “Thanks” to all of you for your support and for all you do for Elkdom. You have all helped to support my motto of “Be the Elk you know you can be.” Keep living up to our virtues of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity. Thank You and God Bless, Teddy G. The Charitable Trust is a North Carolina State Elks Association corporation founded October 28, 1993, and if you belong to an Elks Lodge in good standing in NC, then you are a member of the NC Charitable Trust. Currently all lodges in NC are members. The Trust was established to ensure that the Charitable and Benevolent Works of the Elks Lodges in North Carolina will remain financially viable into the future. The Charitable Trust is governed by its By Laws-Article I through Article XII. North Carolina State Elks Charitable Trust funds make it possible for us to pursue a variety of valuable endeavors for North Carolinian’s each year. When you contribute to the NC State Charitable Trust, Inc. you are insuring that we will be able to continue our state major projects in the years to come. Trust funds are dedicated solely to projects deemed important in NC by the NC Elks and the NC Elks State Charitable Trust Inc. These projects include purchasing transportation vans, televisions, power wheel chairs, comfort items, and sponsoring activities for NC State Veterans in Veterans nursing Homes and VA Centers as well as supporting Camp Carefree, a camp for children with chronic illnesses. The Gerald and Lea Coates Endowment Fund was established October 24, 1997 and is an entity for the charities of the North Carolina State Elks Association Charitable Trust, Inc. A perpetual endowment fund set aside for the sole purpose of preservation of the principle and the generation of income. When you contribute to the NCSEA Charitable Trust endowment fund, your gift is permanently invested. The principle of the endowment fund will never be spent; however the accumulated growth may be utilized as needed by NCSEA Charitable Trust to insure the continuation of our programs that we value. You can make your contribution a thoughtful gift. Your gift to the Gerald and Lea Coates Endowment Fund for the Charities of the NCSEA can honor the memory of a deceased friend, relative or associate. It can also be a gift in observance of someone’s birthday, anniversary, recovery from an illness, or other special occasions. If you wish, you can give cash or check through your lodge to the fund. When your gift is received a card will be sent in your name to the family of the deceased or to the person honored in observance of a special occasion. The amount of the gift will not be indicated. The NCSEACT is a, by law, Non-Profit Tax Exempted Organization as described in IRA section 501 C(3). Planned gifts include bequests, gifts of life insurance and retirement plans, and other contributions made through a donor’s estate. Through a will, living trust, or retirement plan, individual can make gifts that are larger than anything they could imagine in their lifetime. The process is very simple for most individuals. You need only to include appropriate language in your will. Gifts through wills, living trust, or retirement plans offer a number of advantages such as: They are revocable by the donor if circumstances change. They realize the donor’s vision for the future in a tangible way without an uncomfortable financial burden during his or her lifetime. Individuals may choose to designate their support to any part of the Trust. For individuals who wish to support at the North Carolina State Elks Association Charitable Trust Inc. levels that will produce an endowment in perpetuity, separate endowment agreements can be created to spell out the donor’s wishes. They may reduce estate tax for the surviving family members. Photo by Juanita Adams The Sandpiper February - March 2015 Page 12 “So long as there are Veterans, - We shall never forget them!” Continuing in their tradition of hard work and service to our Veterans, your VAC recently hosted a luncheon at the lodge on March 5th for 21 Veteran Couples, of which one of the spouses was a Veteran or Active Duty Military. In attendance were Veterans from WW II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. The luncheon was Free-of-Charge for the attendees, the purpose being to recognize and show our appreciation for, not only the Veteran or Military person in the family, but the Spouse as well, who had also sacrificed. Additionally, each Veteran/Military Member who attended the luncheon was awarded one of our proprietary “VAC ~ 2679 Veteran’s Appreciation” Blankets. The event was truly a “Team Effort” of many people from our Elks Family, and we Thank all of them, including: Ricky Moore and Emily Beecher for their Help; Charlie Tetta for procuring and preparing the food; the Ladies Auxiliary who provided desserts, and the many members of the VAC who set up, served, provided camaradie to our guests, and cleaned up. A Good Day was had by all. The VAC Remembers George Griffin The members of the Veteran’s Affairs Committee (VAC) fondly remember their Co-Chairman, George Griffin, who passed away on the morning of Wednesday, February 25, 2015. George Co-Chaired the VAC along with Austin Sammon. Together, they assumed the reigns of the VAC from Bill Fossum in 2007. As recounted by Austin, the deal was that George (Army) would establish contacts for the VAC at Ft. Bragg, and Austin (Marines) would do the same at Camp LeJeune. So off they went, and over the past 7 years and many successful Luncheons for Vets, Bar-B-Ques at the Veteran’s Retirement Home, Vet-Days-at-the-Lodge, Thanksgiving Luncheons, Flea Markets, Mini-Golf Tournaments, Coffee & Donut Days at Assisted Living Facilities, Care Packages mailed to the Troops Overseas, and (literally) Thousands of Candy Bars later, the VAC has garnered awards and the respect of all in the Elks and Veteran’s Communities for all the “Good Deeds” accomplished under the leadership of George Griffin and Austin Sammon. George was a native of Washington State, where he also attended college and played basketball. George was Army Airborne and served 2 tours in Vietnam where he was wounded. He also worked for the Veteran’s Administration for a while after leaving the military. The members of the VAC are proud to have had George lead them in the activities of the committee. In the Tradition of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, we offer an 11 O’clock toast to George, “ . . . To our absent members!” The Sandpiper April - May 2015 Page 15 Your lodge needs your help!
