InterAcademy Partnership (IAP)
Affiliated Regional Networks of IAP
The work of the world’s academies of science, medicine and engineering has resulted in lives saved,
better education, and more effective policy approaches to a range of issues. The newly formed
InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) is a new organization of academies bringing together established
global networks of academies of science, medicine and engineering into a new collaboration in which
academies will work together to support the special role of science and its efforts to seek solutions
to address the world’s most challenging problems.
IAP announced that The Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), The
European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC), Network of African Science Academies
(NASAC), and InterAmerican Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS) as the four regional
affiliated networks of IAP. IAP Affiliated Network status will help AASSA carry out steady and longterm project developments such as SDA project report.
As an umbrella organization, IAP is able to harness the expertise of the world’s scientific, medical
and engineering leaders to advance sound policies, promote excellence in science education,
improve public health, and achieve other critical development goals.
IAP’s some 130 national members and regional networks have compiled an extensive track record of
delivering evidence-based advice and performing other services for the global community. This new
organization will enable IAP to enlarge the scale and scope of these contributions.
The President of AASSA is serving on the Board of the Partnership.

HISTORY IN BRIEF
09
The Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in
Asia (AASSA) was launched in January 1, 2012 with 34 member
Academies and Societies of science from 30 Countries. With
IAP's strong support for the merger, AASA and FASAS had been
discussing a merger into a single Asian science organization
since late 2008. After discussions over the last couple of years,
and most recently at the meetings of AASA and FASAS held in
Nepal in November 2011, members of both AASA and FASAS
have unanimously and wholeheartedly endorsed the merger.
History in
Brief
Through the merger, AASSA is expected to increase the
visibility for science and increase efficiency, particularly
in relation to resources (human and financial) with
reduced overlap of activities and meetings, and provide
a better platform for fundraising and interaction with
other science organizations.
The inaugural general assembly of AASSA took place
in Sri Lanka in October 2012. A new constitution for
AASSA was formally sanctioned and election of new
officers also took place.new officials also took place.
